Bug? Follow button appears in theme even if unchecked in Reading settings
-
Hi, all – I turned off the setting ‘Show follow button to logged out users.’ in the Reading section of Settings, but as of the last 24 hours or so, there is a new Follow button there anyway. If I turn the setting on again, the regular Follow button appears beneath the new one. If I turn it off again, only the new Follow button shows up. How can I turn off the new one? Is it embedded in the theme I’m using? It wasn’t when I started using the theme. Pictures: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ei64mg6kxitakp8/AAAQQzjsXuQLK544e1eQqPFKa?lst
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The new follow button you are seeing is the logged-in view, and there is not an option to turn it off. The setting you’re thinking of is for the logged-out follow button, which there are plans to update in the future to match the new one.
Here’s the related announcement post if you’re interested in checking it out: https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2015/08/26/new-action-bar/

Aha, wait, I see what you mean now that logged-out button setting is not quite right. We’re on it!

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, it appears when I’m logged out. I used an Incognito window to make sure that I was.
Thank you!

All righty. It’s already fixed (that was quick!), and I checked https://gregwalkervoiceover.wordpress.com/ while logged out and the setting looks like it’s working as it should now.
Sorry I didn’t catch all the details on my first reply, and thank you so much for posting this!

I’m having trouble with it as it’s so touchy. I ended up following blogs accidentally and then having to unfollow, when all I wanted to do was get the detailed theme description page link. Also I find having to scroll down to use that link to get to the detailed theme description pages to be annoyance that means it takes me longer to answer theme related support questions.
I strongly desire to see the theme description page links removed from behind the action bar and placed again on the Admin bar where I can use theme quickly and easily.

You shouldn’t have to scroll at all if your first goal is to check the theme. The action bar should appear on load, without any scrolling, and then disappear while you are scrolling down—the idea behind that is for it to get out of the way while you’re reading. Readers are the main audience for that behavior.
Another thought, could it be that you’re scrolling too quickly and making it act jumpy or disappear unexpectedly because you scroll around immediately by default? I was thinking that could happen if scrolling is your go-to first action on a site (mine is clicking white space, it’s a quirky habit I do).
Thank you for your feedback and for giving context about it. I’m going to watch for additional feedback about this as we go. So far, it’s mixed regarding the theme details link because another person has said they really like the new location for that. It’s still really early to judge though!

1. Does that person answer support forum questions related to themes?
2. Regardless of the answer to 1. does that person use a desktop computer?
3. Or is that person using a different device and reporting that the action bar positioning which was made to accommodate mobile and tablet users is working fine for them on their mobile or tablet device?
-
1. Yes :)
2. I think yes
3. Not sureMore importantly though, I think it’s early to decide—plus sometimes it’s a preference in the feedback and we have to make the best decision we can based on different factors including not only that feedback but also stats as well as watching how new users react to a feature as well as thoughtfulness from the designer who originally set it up the way they did. Let’s see how it goes and I will make sure to re-visit this idea after more feedback comes in.

I believe feedback is much more relevant when the kind of device and browser being used are revealed by the person providing the feedback. As this action bar has been re-positioned at the bottom right hand corner for the convenience of mobile and tablet users unless Staff get feedback from those using all of the various devices, including desktop users like me, then the value of the feedback will be of low quality.P.S. My hubby is an Ipad, iphone and and i everything person. He also has a a Windows desktop like mine running windows 7. I will be getting a new Microsoft surface 3 running Windows 10 next month and using it for my music related stuff.

I’m trying to read my pages – it is an interactive process (on my PC) – and this notice keeps popping up and getting in the way. I don’t mind new things, but this has to be able to be turned off at the very least.
-
@bbgoodman, it should only reappear when you are scrolling back up. If you are constantly scrolling up and down a lot during the time when you are reading a post, then that might explain it appearing and reappearing constantly like you’ve described. Does that sound like it might be what’s happening?
I have tested this feature quite a bit as it was being developed, and I didn’t run into what you’ve described so I’m not sure yet what might be going on in your case.

@timethief
I’m the one who said I liked it, so desktop user all the way.I guess we have different preferences in this case :)
