Bug? Importing from self-hosted wordpress to wordpress.com takes FOREVER!

  • Unknown's avatar

I opened up a new wordpress.com blog, and tried to import ALL posts, comments, etc. from my previous self-hosted wordpress blog. There are over 4000 posts out there, and each post has at least one media (just jpeg or png images). The wordpress.com importer told me it takes 15 min but it has been taking me more than 3 hours. As each minute goes by, the fear of ‘this is not going to be done ever’ starts to come all over me. Could you please check whether the import thread/process is already DEAD? what exactly is it taking so long?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Your xml file might be too large. The maximum supported import size is 15MB, so several smaller .xml files may need to be exported from your WordPress.org.

I am adding the tag modlook to call this thread to staff’s attention. They will assist you as soon as they are available.

Thanks for the quick help. It’s a bad news because my xml file is indeed 85mb and it will be really a hassle to cut it into several pieces…

Another question, once the import is complete, i assume only the “text” will be imported, right? What about the previously-uploaded media image files… they obviously are not included in the 85mb XML file. How can I import those images from my self-hosted site to wordpress.com?

    Thanks again

  • Good morning –

Yes, you are correct. Only text is going to be included with the xml.

These are the step-by-step instructions to move your WordPress site over to WordPress.com:

Give those a look over and write back with any other questions.
