Bug in Gallery Widget

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently noticed that anytime I create a gallery widget and fill it entirely with third-party image links (e.g. from Flickr) I am greeted with a black screen – no image – when I click on that image and bring up the image overlay. Also, the button to close the overlay does not work and I have to refresh the page. I managed to find a workaround for it, but I want to know this: I do believe this is a bug, and thus is there a patch upcoming that will address this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello –

Thanks for writing to us. I see that you also opened an email ticket. That’s been closed to limit confusion and we can continue this conversation here.

Looking through the site I wasn’t able to locate a published gallery. Perhaps I overlooked it? Please point me to that with link or title of the post/page where the issue is happening. Thanks!

Thanks for closing – really appreciate the commitment to keeping things between us.

Please see the following post; it’s the very first gallery widget (directly under the section “Toronto Comicon: Sunday”) https://traditionalcatholicweeb.wordpress.com/2023/03/31/convention-tales-19-one-day-at-comicon/

  • Hey there,

No problem at all and happy to help with this.

It looks like the image is being loaded from Flickr into the gallery block, and so there could be something awry with the image link itself.

Do you have a link to the Flickr gallery itself so that we can take a closer look please?

It may be the case Flickr hasn’t allowed access to the image itself.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Al,

    The album in question: https://www.flickr.com/photos/tradcathweeb/albums/72177720306947141

I don’t think it has to do with the access level of the photo though. I used another public image from my album and I still was able to replicate the bug. So something else must be going on…

Public photo in question I used is https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52767608394_91b7a1d819_b.jpg, private image is https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52773174827_e545c00b86_b.jpg

So when I pulled up that page, the gallery is loading for me with no issues:

Can you check to confirm that it’s working for you? It’s possible that there was an access issue on Flickr’s end that may be resolved now?

Let us know if you still have trouble!

    Hi Hero!

Please click on one of the images in the aforementioned gallery. You will notice that the popover for the image opens up… without the image. All I get is a black screen, and I cannot close it. This will happen for any image that comes from a third-party site like Flickr, Google Images, etc.

I have posted two images: in the first is when I first click on the image to get the popover open, and in the second, when I click on the “X” to close it.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for the details!

I suspect the issue here is that the images are not being added to your Media Library, if you check now, I was able to set them to display as a separate File Page, but there’s no option to show them in a carrousel.

Could you walk us through the steps of how you added the images to the gallery through Flickr? We’ll try to replicate it with different images and services.

    Absolutely.

    1. I would add a gallery and add some placeholder photos using existing images in my library.
    2. I would then click on that image, and on the toolbar that pops up, click “Replace”
    3. Under the URL section I would type in the link to the image hosted on Flickr. Rinse and repeat for however many images are left.

Let me know if this helped?

  • Thanks! That does clarify things. It appears this might be related to a bug we’ve previously reported to our developers in relation to a different type of gallery (tiled gallery), but it also appears to be true for the regular gallery which you’re using at the moment.

It’s not quite the same thing, but we do have Flickr embeds that might be useful for you too:

Flickr is a web-based photo management application that allows users to upload, organize, and share their favorite photos. It takes care of your image resizing, allows you to tag your photos, and even enables visitors to submit notes and comments on each photo. What’s more, with just a few clicks, you can post a photo from your Flickr account onto your WordPress.com blog. Flickr Embeds You

I did see that you’ve switched the gallery on your post mentioned above to link to the media files instead as a workaround too.

Alternatively, since it’s definitely due to the images being external images, you could absolutely upload them to your Media library here too!

I think I will stick to making the gallery images link to the media files via HTML for now, that is working seamlessly for me at the moment. Thank you for noting that!

Do you know if you are currently working on addressing that bug now? While not urgent for my case, I think it would be nice to have that fixed in time soon.

We’ll report it to our developers. Once it’s fixed or we have any news, we’ll update you.

Thank you for all your help! I am content with sticking with the workaround above for now. Please do update if it ever gets fixed.

    Will mark as resolved.
