Bug in Modern Theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

I just added the Modern theme to my blog/site and kept the home page option. Even after I privately publish the site (it’s still in draft), there is an ‘edit’ button (it’s just text with a hyperlink) that won’t go away on the home page (when I view in preview mode it is still there) — it’s just above the footer. How can I remove this? Also when I try to edit the footer, I receive a ‘copy error’ message. How can I edit the footer? Are these bugs?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hi there, only Admins and Editors on the site can see that EDIT link when logged in to WordPress.com. You can test this by looking at your site while logged out or using an incognito browser window.

As far as the footer, I don’t see a “Modern” theme in the theme showcase. Can you share a link to your site?

Hi there justjennifer thanks for the quick reply. Your answer takes care of the edit button mystery. As far as the footer issue — I just checked on the theme name…it’s actually “morden” (my bad).

    Thanks!

    OK-two mysteries solved then. :)

I read about an issue with editing the footer in the family of themes that Morden belongs to, but can you say in which dashboard you’re editing the widgets, whether it’s in the Customizer or in the WP Admin>Appearance>Widgets dashboard? Also, what browser and OS are you using to do this?

(I’ll go search for the reference in the meantime. Thanks for your patience.)

Hello again, It looks like there are a couple of recent threads that address the footer “copy error”.
    https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/widget-editor-not-working-for-multiple-themes/
    https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/report-the-footer-customization-error/

I’ve gone ahead and flagged this thread for Staff attention and assistance. Thanks again for your patience while they get back to you, but it would definitely be helpful to know which dashboard you’re editing the widgets, whether it’s in the Customizer or in the WP Admin>Appearance>Widgets dashboard? Also, what browser and OS are you using to do this?

  • Hello there!

Happy to help you with this.

‘copy error’ message. How can I edit the footer? Are these bugs?

Can you tell me what widgets were being added here please?

We’re curious as to whether this is widget specific or theme specific.

    Many thanks.

Hello, I am customizing morden on a mac os.

Below the “edit” link towards the bottom of the home page, there is an edit pencil — it sits between the menu footer and the edit link. When i click on it, it says, the editor has encountered an expected error – copy error. and it seems to be categorized under customizing – widgets -Footer. I am accessing all of this by selecting appearance from the editor side bar menu then “manage with live preview” then I scroll down to find the edit pencil

Thanks for the extra details! It looks like that you’re experiencing the same problem that we’re tracking internally. The error is intermittent and our engineers are still working on narrowing down its cause. Once it is fixed you should be able to use the Customizer again, as usual.

As a temporary workaround, I would recommend going to My Sites → Appearance → Widgets or directly here:
