Bug in the classic block

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m writing a long text and, for this type of text, I prefer the classic block; but I noticed a bug (which has occurred in the past and has been fixed): it is not following the progress of the text. Whenever I have to make a change, like italicizing a word, I have to go to the top of the page. Is there any way this can be fixed?

  • Hi there, @radtrad!

    Thanks for reaching out.

We have requested this feature for you. Right now, this is just a downside of using the Classic Block with longer content. Ideally, we hope to implement a floating toolbar, as the way this is designed right now does make it a bit tricky to format longer content added to the Classic Block.

There are a couple of workarounds here:

    1. Edit your posts via the classic posts page view. From there, hover over the post you want to edit → Classic Editor
    2. Use blocks instead. Here is how to convert a Classic Block’s content to blocks: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/#convert-to-blocks

Let me know if you have any questions!

Ok, but I need to remember that this is not a simple downside, it is a bug; two weeks ago everything was ok in this type of post.

  • Hi there, @radtrad!

I’ve reported this issue to our developers to see if a floating toolbar is feasible, but I can’t offer a timeline for this. With that in mind, I’d like to focus on a workaround that will allow you to edit the page as usual. Were you able to try either of the workarounds I mentioned?

Also, if you could, please share an example of a post where you didn’t see this issue. Is there less content added to that post?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I´ll try the classic posts page view.

to see if a floating toolbar is feasible

It was possible until a few weeks ago.

When the classic block was deployed, it had this limitation, but it was fixed. That is, in all the posts I wrote with it, the bar floated along with the text without the slightest problem.

    Now the limitation is back.

    Thanks.

    Any news about this bug?

  • Hi there,

This is something our devs are still looking into. The issue was updated as recently as a few hours ago so I can see it is something they are still working on but do not have a resolution for.

Correct, this is a regression, which is when a change to some other piece(s) of code can sometimes have effects on other parts of the code base. These can be tricky to track down however, which will often delay our ability to fix it quickly. We’ve made a note of this issue in our tracker and will update you as soon as we know more. Thanks!
