Bug in the posts (after editing)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear WordPress,

We, at the movie website http://www.apaladewalsh.com, are dealing with a very damaging bug in some of our articles. When some of them are revised the paragraphs, without any reason, simply disappear! The text loses all the spaces between paragraphs, being the result a horrible bloc of text.

We are all the time correcting our own revisions because of this very annoying bug.

I really hope you can help me solve this as soon as possible, because it is damaging the image of the website and the result of our work.

    Best regards,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It sounds like you are copying and pasting text perhaps from Microsoft WORD.

Go to Dashboard > settings > Writing and enable this setting
    Formatting
__WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    “save changes”

    Then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-and-formatting-poetry/

If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph.

If you are working in the HTML (Text) editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.

P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

Thanks, time thief, but the bug persists. We changed the XHTML and without doing nothing besides changing , a post lost its paragraphs. It had already happened when I changed just one word in an article and saved it. After that I lost all the paragraphs.

It has been happening with all of us in our website, and we don’t know what is causing – it wasn’t like this.

    *besides changing some words.

I also had this experience today. I was editing a post, added a single text link on its own line, updated, and all the paragraph breaks disappeared. There were no HTML errors in that post either.

Once I put the breaks back in by hand they stayed.

  • Hello Luis!

I’m sorry about this. Can you tell me which post you had trouble with? Also, does the post lose its formatting after saving it or from switching from Visual to Text Editor mode, or vice-versa? If the problem persists, you may switch to Text Editor mode initially and copy all of the text then paste it into an app such as TextEdit.

That way, should anything go wrong, you’ll have a back up of the post with the correct formatting. You may also edit the post in TextEdit and paste it into the post editor in Text mode and save it.

Let me know if that helps. Thanks!

Thanks, Druesome, but that we can do automatically, by going back to the revisions panel and going back to a saved version where the paragraphs are still there.

When we do that, there is a problem: we naturally lose the changes that were made. What we are doing is to reestablish the paragraphs manually, having that previous saved version as a guide.

This problem is happening almost daily. The last post with that problem was this one: http://apaladewalsh.com/2014/06/20/a-realidade-hoje-foi-imaginacao-ontem/ (it is now corrected. I can send you a capture of the post when the bug attacks again.)

Please try to see what happened here, because this wasn’t like this.

    Best regards,

  • Hey Luis,

My guess is the switching back and forth from Text to Visual mode is what’s causing the problem. I would suggest editing only in Text Editor mode as the Visual Editor is known to strip line breaks, as mentioned here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/styling-individual-posts-and-pages/#adding-extra-line-breaks

You may also choose to wrap your text around paragraph tags with a style attribute, such as in the following:

    <p style="padding-top:14px;">Your paragraph of text here.</p>

The style attribute prevents the paragraph tags from being stripped by the Visual Editor.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you need anything else.
