Bug: Publication theme on tablet device

  • Unknown's avatar

When you view any site using the Publication theme (including the demo site – http://publicationdemo.wordpress.com) on a vertically-oriented tablet device, there is a large gray bar that appears on the right hand side of the screen (under the menu toggle) that causes the featured image to be truncated and pushed left, making the headline illegible. Orienting the tablet device (I’m using an iPad Mini) horizontally resolves the issue. If this can’t be fixed, I’m going to have to select another template for my site. Any help appreciated. Thank you!

OK. I’m sorry. I just want someone to take a look at this as it’s something that’s obviously wrong in the code. My first post in the forums was nearly 2 weeks ago and it went unanswered … and I’m on a deadline in building this site. If it’s not fixable, I need to choose a different template ASAP so I can keep going. ~ CS

I’m subscribed. Thank you for your help. Hoping this can be fixed … the template is otherwise beautiful! ~ CS

Also, I’d be happy to send screengrabs if that’s helpful. But I believe the issue should be easily replicated because it’s been consistent across every site I’ve visited that uses the Publication theme. ~ CS

Hi there! Thanks for reporting this issue! (Sorry we missed you before! And thanks for the assist in grabbing our attention, timethief.)

I checked out your site and the demo site and was able to replicate the issue on a few different iPad types. I’m going to report it to the theme developer to see about a fix.

Let me know if you have any questions! I’ll update here when I’ve got more info. :)

Excellent … thanks so much! The good news is that thesacredpath replied to my duplicate post in another forum and said that he’s not seeing the issue on his tablet (iPad, iOS 9.2.1), so that gave me hope that maybe it was a versioning issue. If there’s any other data you need me to provide, happy to help. (I used to do a bit of QA at Yahoo, so I’m familiar with the process.)

    Thanks again! ~ CS

Yep, I didn’t see it on all iPads in general, but on a few types. I’ll report and let you know how it goes or if we need more information from you. :)

If it helps, I’m on an iPad Mini 2, iOS 7.1.2 in Safari.

    Ah, okay.

The theme developer took a look and that display issue is specific to iOS 7 (and possibly earlier), but clears up when you update iOS to 8 or 9. Can you update and give it a look?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ll certainly give that a try, yes. I don’t have my iPad with me today … but will do that tomorrow and let you know if that resolves the issue. I’m assuming our event attendees will have devices with updated iOS, but I’m not 100% certain on that. Is the theme just no longer supporting iOS 7? If that’s the case, I may have to add a note on the site encouraging folks to update when they have issues.

Great! Give the update a try & be sure to let me know if you still notice any issues.

As for support, for themes on mobile browsers we typically support the most recent version, and encourage users to keep their devices up to date, as this can prevent security issues.

iOS 8 was released in September 2014, and iOS 7 was released a year before, so visitors will have likely updated during that time. Or bought a new iPad since they come out so often! ;)

Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions!
