Bug report
-
I was using the new editor and tried to block quote highlighted text. No matter what I did, the editor made the entire post into one big block quote. I switched to the classic editor and had no problem block quoting selected text.

Thanks for reporting this.
I’m going to report the problem to our developers, and could use a few more details first. Do you mind answering a couple of questions?
1) Was the highlighted text in a paragraph by itself, or were you trying to pull a quote out of the middle of a paragraph?
2) I see you use block quote in your posts pretty often. Was this the first time you had a problem with the new editor, or the first time you tried the new editor?
Any other details your remember about what you were doing and how the software behaved are also really useful.
Thanks!

1) The highlighted text was a distinct paragraph, the central of three, at the time I tried to block it. I even tried deleting the other two paragraphs, blocking the paragraph of interest, and then re-pasting the other two, but they came blocked, and when I unchecked the blockquote, the paragraph I blocked undid itself too, even though it wasn’t highlighted.
2) I don’t really pay attention to which editor I use. If you released it since Nov.28, then it was the first time I used the new editor. If it’s been around longer than that, I really don’t know, I just start typing in whatever comes up on the page.

Thanks for the extra details.
Did you copy/paste the text over from a separate word processor, or did you write the post in the editor?
If you copied the post over, sometimes you’ll see spaces between paragraphs, but WordPress doesn’t see them as paragraph breaks because of the code used to create them. So it could be that to human eyes it looked like you had three paragraphs, but to the computer it all looked like one.
That having been said, I haven’t been able to replicate this problem, so I can’t report it, but I’ll keep my eye out for similar issues.
Thanks again for taking the time to report what you saw.

I actually typed it as a comment to another WordPress article, then realized it was a good core for a post of my own, so I c’n’p-ed it into the editor. The original was straight text.

And like I said, I tried deleting everything BUT the blockquote, and then re-inserting the other text, but it was all or nothing.

I agree it’s strange. I’ll keep playing with my test sites to see if I can replicate the issue.
