Bug report – two step authentication
-
When I logged into WordPress.com it was extremely unintuitive in terms of finding where I set my new phone number, as my prior number was cut off and I no longer have access … but having eventually found it and changed it, the next problem I encountered is that this new number doesn’t seem to have registered itself with the 2-step authentication setting, and I can’t attempt to turn that setting off and then switch it back on again, because when I try to turn it off, it tells me that it’s sending a verification code to that old number I no longer have, and even though I just entered my new phone number in the account recovery settings from a sibling sub-menu under the security parent menu …
… seems to me that a bug of this nature shouldn’t exist in such a well established product.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. You will need a code to switch the 2FA number. Do you have a backup code you can use?
If not, can you please reach out directly to our account recovery team here? You’ll need to use the form mentioned here:

“2FA” is the abbreviation for two-factor authentication, or two-step authentication, so the 2FA number is the number with which you set that up and where you’re receiving the codes.
You cannot change that number without first entering a code, so if you can no longer receive codes at the current number, you’ll need to use one of the backup codes we gave you when you first set that up instead.
