Bugs in media handling?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve got an amount of pictures in my media library. I write my blogs, attach som pictures and upload the article. But suddenly I’ve experienced some problems. My library shows that ALL my pictures are attached to articles, even if they are NOT. And if I focus on an article that I know has only ONE picture, it seems thay quite a number of different pictures are attached to that article. Choosing ‘Unattached’ gived of course no pictures. How come? I discovered the problem when one of my pictures seemed to be missing when I clicked on its thumbnail. But it really is inside the media library. Just attached to another article. When I click on that article, the lost picture isn’t there. (And it shouldn’t either) Bug???

Next question: When I write an article and attach , let’s say, three pictures, why is it that the ‘<a href=’ is only used in front of the first picture, so that clicking on the second and the third picture give me the same result as when I click on the first? (I’ve fixed it manually on some of the latest articles, but not on the rest. Take a look at [1/8-2008 Parkeringsplass mot øst] and earlier articles.) Bug???

Re your second question: When you reupload an image, it gets an extra number attached to its name to distinguish it. E.g. “pic.jpg” reuploaded will become “pic1.jpg”, if you upload it again it will become “pic2.jpg”, etc. So what happens in your case is that with the names you’ve used (“080801_p_plass1”, “080801_p_plass2”, etc.) your blog thinks it’s copies of the same image. You should use more characteristic and differentiated names that don’t end with a number.

Well, this didn’t turn out to work the way I wanted. But just click on this huge hypertext, and it surely will send you to the first of my four pictures, precisely as it does in my site.

To post code here, you must enclose it between backticks. But you didn’t have to do that: I had looked at the sourse code of your page (where do you think I found the image names?).

At the moment I cannot possibly imagine how you get the single-href problem. When you say you “attach” three pics in a post, what are the exact steps you’re following?

  • Unknown's avatar

Take a look at my last blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried it in my tests blog a few times, and in one of my attempts I managed to replicate the situation. The only fishy thing in your list is “Add one space”. In the visual editor it may fool you if you’re not paying attention: if you only hit the spacebar one time, the cursor may still remain inside the code of the image. I suggest you follow the same steps in the html editor, in which you can see for sure that you’re past the closing bracket of the code before the next insertion.

You could alo try the “gallery” feature, which allows you to upload and insert all the images at once (but you’ll have to upload them from your computer, not the media library).

If you want space between photos, you can use the image editor (the mountain icon when you click on a picture), go to “Advanced Settings” and fill in “horizontal space.”

    Thanks for comment!

Now I’ve made another test blog, using the html editor. The ‘ahref’ thing works just fine, but the images now get stacked on top of each other. When I added a space between the images, using the ‘visual’ editor, they were placed ‘in line’ like I wanted them to.

So, how do I place the images ‘in line’ and make the ‘ahref’ work – at the same time? (I can still fix this manually in html, but should it really be necessary?

  • Unknown's avatar

No it shouldn’t be necessary! If you’re getting them the one below the other, chances are you’re somehow creating paragraph breaks or line returns: make sure each image code continues where the previous ended, not in a new line. Also try align left instead of none. (Are you using the same theme in the new blog or not?)

And you should really try the gallery feature.

  • Unknown's avatar

The problem gets solved in both ways. First, I eliminated the new ‘line’ in the code, and the images are placed correct. Second, I tried ‘align left’, and I get the same result. (Also the html code looks as I want it to.)

I will also take a look into the gallery feature, but not yet.

Besides, my first question has been restarted in a new thread.

Do I use the same theme in the new blog? I don’t fully grasp what’s in your question, but english is not my language though.

Thank you for helping – so far!

    Einar

    You’re welcome.

As for the themes question (although not of importance anymore, since the problem is solved): in the blog linked to your name you’re using Rubric, a flexible-width theme; are you using the same theme in your new blog? A fixed-width theme won’t necessarily behave the same way.

  • Unknown's avatar

I see! I’ve experimented with a lot of themes, but I never got the feeling ‘This one is perfect for me’.

I like ‘Rubric’ because it’s nice and clean, and WIDE!

What new blog? You mean ‘miradoll’? Cause that’s my new blog. (I don’t actually know what you can possible know.)

Have tried some other themes in that one. I like ‘Sweet blossoms’ because Mira is a girl – nine months old and my son’s firstborn daughter. But this theme is extremely narrow for showing a lot of pics.

    So – I don’t really know yet…

” What new blog? […] (I don’t actually know what you can possible know.) “

I’m not staff – I’m just a fellow blogger: I can’t know anything more than what you say, what you link to, and what I can see in the source code of your page. You mentioned a new test blog in your 2:55 PM post.

” I’ve experimented with a lot of themes, but I never got the feeling ‘This one is perfect for me’ “

    O yeah, I know that feeling…

  • Unknown's avatar

I believe the OP was referring to a new test post in the blog rather than a new blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

@Tess: Oh yes you’re right. In the first post here it’s clear that he uses “blog” for “post”, but I didn’t remember that.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi pana,
Yes, it gets confusing because the terms are undefined, or at least vague, for newbees; and then what do you call folk who know something (or folk like me who want to think [hope] they do)?

  • Unknown's avatar

Also the visual editor can really mess things up sometimes.

  • Unknown's avatar

I know you’re just a fellow blogger, but it seems that you know a lot more than me.
When you earlier said: “But you didn’t have to do that: I had looked at the sourse code of your page (where do you think I found the image names?)”, you demonstrated your ability to find out things I didn’t tell you. So why couldn’t you find out about my other blog, mirabell? Now I know that’s impossible.

The blog and post issue: Where I come from we usually say: ‘He’s a blogger, he’s blogging’ when he’s actually adding new posts in his only blog.

So, I’ll work on it! I’m adding a new post in my blog – yeah!

  • Unknown's avatar

Btw, in the sidebar, there’s a dropdown menu, saying: ‘This topic is not a support question’, and the other choices are ‘resolved’ and ‘not resolved’.

I think that my quesiton IS a supppport question, which makes me choose between ‘resolved’ and ‘not resolved’.

But what does these words really mean? I’ve tried to find it out, without getting any wiser…
