Build free website mapped to existing domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have purchased a domain name with Fasthosts but want to build the site in WordPress. I’ve been told I can build it for free but when I try to follow the process, it seems I have to pay to map the domain to WordPress, and to have a package that I don’t want. Any pointers?
Also my client wants an ‘old school’ format of tabs along the top of the screen, not scrolling down through the page for information, and I can’t find that format. Again, any pointers please?
    Thanks

    Hi blythlivestock,

Custom domains are a feature of paid plans, which is why you are being prompted to upgrade. However, you can start by creating a free site (with a free address), choosing a theme and making customisations, without upgrading to begin with :)

The existing domain can then be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com whenever you are ready to make the switch.

If you want to upgrade plans in order to use upgraded features like additional storage space before then, the domain credit can be left unused until a later date.

Just to make sure I’ve understood correctly — do you mean a menu spanning the width of the site rather just than a menu icon? If so, these themes all have a “classic menu” which is visible at all times:

I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have!
