Building a homepage displaying only categories and their icons

  I’m developing a WordPress blog for the first time and my client has typically asked for something which needs a bit of research..

  1. They would like each category to have its own icon/image.
  2. They would like the homepage to be a display of all the categories (for example, 9×9 icons) each one linking to that category page, where all the appropriate posts can be found.

  Does anyone have a recommended plugin or template to help me achieve this?
