Building a new site while using the old one

  I’d like to totally rebuild our website using wordpress, but I’d like our members to be able to use the old one until the new one is unveiled. Can we transfer the domain name later?

  Yes. Create a free site. The address won’t be too critical if you aim to to upgrade to a paid plan to map/transfer an existing domain to that WordPress.com site in due course. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
