Building a site before transferring a domain

  Hi,
  I am migrating my Squarespace site, domain registered with GoDaddy, to WordPress. I need this site to remain in operation until my WordPress site is built and ready, at such time I will transfer the domain.
  Please can you explain to me how to go about this.
