Building a site before you get a domain, web address.
-
I’m creating a new company and waiting for the LLC registration, then I can get a domain/web address. If I don’t know what that is, can I download theme “twenty fourteen” and begin building the site before I get it?
-
Certainly. Go ahead and create a blog that’s something like example.wordpress.com and then once you know the custom domain name you want to use, just purchase it through the Store > Domains page in the WP Admin dashboard. Once you do that, you can switch the blog over to the new domain over the top of the old one (the original name will still be used for your dashboard links).

I started with “twenty fourteen” theme and got my header image in there, but I don’t understand how to really start building…adding images from my portfolio, getting the pull-down, pull-out menus, etc. Can you help me get started?
Maybe I don’t understand the terminology; is each project that I want to show, another page?
Thanks much,

For menus, you need to create the content first, then you can start a menu and add elements to it. This page has more detail about how it works:
