Building a site without using a domain

Is it possible to build a website without transferring my domain to it. I want to make sure it’s built and ready before I go live and transfer my current website domain.

Struggling with the same problem here as we are still working on the company name, so how do I start? In somehow I keep being asked for my domain and do not seem to be able to skip it.

@laralienhard, you’ll want to use a free subdomain – like one ending with .wordpress.com. Try typing a whole address like this when you’re prompted to choose a domain name.
