building a webpage

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am trying to set up a simple business webpage. I don’t want it to go live for a few months, but would like to have it ready. Do I need to subscribe to a plan right away while I am building? Also, does the cheapest plan have access to online support?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

You don’t need a paid plan to get started on building your site, no. You’ll only need a plan once you need to use a feature that’s only included in the plan. For example, if you want to do something that requires a plugin, you’ll need to be on the Pro plan before you can do that, or if you want to add a payments block to your site, you’ll need at least the Starter plan.

Else you can do everything on free until you’re ready to add a domain and launch the site.

Our starter plan gives access to private email support, but it doesn’t include live chat support at this time – that’s only available on the Pro plan.

But we’re also happy to help you here in the forums with any questions you might have while you’re still on the free plan :)

So, if i have this correct, I require the Pro plan to have a “contact us” section where clients can send a message, a calendar where they can make appointments and the capability to accept payments online. I assume these are through plugins hence I need to purchase the Pro plan. Correct?
What is the difference between a payments block and a payments plugin?
If I use a WordPress theme which appears to have these capabilities, they won’t function unless I have the Pro plan and purchase the associated plugins. Correct?
If I get the Starter plan, I won’t be able to purchase plugins?

  • Hi there,

I require the Pro plan to have a “contact us” section where clients can send a message, a calendar where they can make appointments, and the capability to accept payments online.

The contact form is already built-in and available in all our plans, including the Free. You can find more information here:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/form-block/

As for the other two, you’ll need a plugin that’ll allow you to perform those actions.

What is the difference between a payments block and a payments plugin?

The Payments block is already built-in in all our paid plans. This allows you to accept payments for both physical and digital goods. It’s not meant to be used as a way to build an online store, though. You’ll need an e-commerce solution, like the WooCommerce plugin.

If I use a WordPress theme which appears to have these capabilities, they won’t function unless I have the Pro plan and purchase the associated plugins. Correct?

Yes, that’s correct. To install a third-party e-commerce theme, you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro plan.

If I get the Starter plan, I won’t be able to purchase plugins?

Yes, the Starter plan doesn’t allow you to install any plugins.

If you have any other questions, just let me know, and I’ll be happy to help.
