building a website

  I am just exploring wordpress. I have an existing website that is chugging along but am looking at redesigning the look of a new one using wordpress ready to replace the old one. Sounding a little silly, but if I transfer my domain name at this point , I don’t want my old site to go down (not built in wordpress) until I am ready to launch the new one. will the basic wordpress site allow me to get this initial work prepared before I start paying for a business website.
