building a website before transferring a domain
-
I am a current wix customer and I want to move my site over to wp. I have a domain and don’t want to interrupt my business but I will need to build a new site with wp first. How do I seamlessly do this? Thanks

Good Morning –
Great question! This is a very common request. Go ahead and build your new site on WordPress.com. Import your content, customize the theme, get it all ready to launch.
Keeping the new site private will help prevent any SEO confusion since you’re going to have the same content on two different addresses.

There’s 2 ways to connect the domain. Either will work fine.
1. Mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
2. Transfer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/Write back with more questions :)

Thank you for your fast response! To clarify my question a bit more, how do I go about building it before wp wants to transfer the domain. I signed up and it’s asking for my domain…with the 2 options hit mentioned above, mapping and transfer.
Thanks

Hi Michelle –
You should see an option to
skipthe domain step. With this process you’re going to build the site on a free site address. The domain will get connected later so no need to worry about that right now. You’re being prompted to answer the domain part of the flow because of an earlier selection in that process. If the
skipdoesn’t work please try clicking on My Sites – Domains – Add New and type in something like your username.home.blog. It should be available and you can register that one to get started. -
