Building a website with WordPress

Can I use WordPress to simply build and host the website? Can that be done with the free version?

Hi there,
Yes, you can build a website with WordPress using the free version, however upgrades offer new features. If you want to try out features of the paid plans, that will require you to upgrade, but WordPress offers a full 30-day refund on all plans if you aren’t happy with it. You can read more about plans here: https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/
If you’re not sure how to get a free domain/website, there are one or two options for free domain names, listed under the recommended domain name. When you are asked to select a plan, there is an option to have a free plan at the top of the page.
You can also publish the site for free. When you go to make your site live, it will ask again if you want to buy a domain name or a plan, but there are options to keep the free domain name and plan by skipping the purchase.I hope this helps!
Just a reminder that this forum is for WordPress.com hosted websites. If you use the open-source WordPress software, you’ll need to go to their forum to get help: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the WordPress software you can read the support post:

I have a domain name already, all that I want to do is build a website for that domain. I don’t want to move the domain to WordPress, I simply want to use WordPress to build a website. When I try to do that, the options that I get are transferring the domain to WordPress or paying WordPress to update the DNS record, I have not been able to find an option to simply build a website. Where do I go to do that?

Hi,
I don’t want to move the domain to WordPress, I simply want to use WordPress to build a website.
Did you want to map the domain and host the site here on our servers, or do you want to install a free copy of WordPress with another host?
This page shows the difference:
You can use our service, which provides hosting and management, as well as support with paid plans. If you use our service, you would need a business plan to add plugins. If you want to host your domain with a site here, you’ll need a paid plan.
Or, you can buy hosting elsewhere, and set up your own free WordPress installation there. Just note many hosts do not offer WordPress management and support, or they charge extra for it. This is a good option if you want to handle the technical end of things yourself. You’ll still have access to the WordPress.org community here, too: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

And, if you intend to get started but without pointing the domain here, that’s fine too; simply skip any domain related options in the setup.

I was looking for a way to try it out to see if I like it. My current domain provider does offer the option of WordPress, but I don’t want to choose that option and then find out that I don’t care for WordPress. They also offer the option of just hosting, but I still need to find a software solution that works for me to build my website. If I choose to have a different provider (such as WordPress) host my website, they will set up the domain to forward web traffic to that provider at no additional charge, so I don’t want to pay someone else to make those changes. I did find that wordpress.org will let me try it out on my own server before making a choice, so I went that route. Thank you!
