building new site from an old one.
-
hi, looking to build a new WP site in a (hopefully) sub-folder of an old website/domain; while keeping the old one public.
1. Can I install and build the new WP site without the public seeing it? [draft or maintenance mode]
2. Then, how do I ‘remove’? the main domain, and put the WP as the main one?
(I heard moving it in different areas/directories really messes things up).I read the mapping and re-pointing, but didn’t make sense to me. These are static sites/pages.

The magic words:

Mean:
The site you are asking about does not seem to be hosted on WordPress.COM so you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.
This site is for support of sites hosted on WordPress.COM. You should address your questions to WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using: http://wordpress.org/support/

Domain mapping would be relevant if you wanted to design your new site on WordPress.COM then change the domain name of your WordPress.COM site to show as your-old-site.com – if you choose this option be sure to read the Terms of Service very closely to make sure your site does not violate them – bad for traffic to have your site suspended just after you move it.
Yes changing directories / folders and the structure of a site is bad for search engines – tends to upset them actually.
