Building New Site with an Existing Domain/Site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I am the Dir. of Communication at a private school and I am looking to redesign/rebuild our website. How do I build the new website with you guys and then once that is ready to launch switch over the domains? Does that make sense?

We also use our domain for email – I have read your help articles on this and I think I understand about contact our DNS host (which I have already done), but I just want to make sure I do this right the first time so I am double checking everything.

    Thank you!

  • Hi Peter –

You can build the new site on a free .wordpress.com site address under your account. If you want, you can keep it under wraps by editing the privacy settings.

Once the site is built out, you would then set up domain mapping.

Domain mapping will connect the custom domain that is currently in use to your WordPress.com site. Visitors will only see the custom domain, not the free .wordpress.com site address. The free .wordpress.com site address will not go away and you will see it under your account, but visitors will not.

When you map the domain WordPress.com will take over the hosting.

Here are the instructions on setting up the email: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/

Just a quick note to point out that there are 2 different versions of WordPress. What we do here at WordPress.com is a tad different from the WordPress installation that you use with a hosting company.

I hope this answers your questions. Feel free to reply with any follow ups.
