Building Site for a Client
-
Hi, I have a small business and have used different formats for designing and creating websites. I wanted to try WordPress and have a question before I begin. What is the best process for setting up a domain and website plan for a client that I will then design and pass back to the client to manage upon completion? Do I just own the page and transfer after?? Just want this to be as seamless as possible but need to have full control until I pass it to the client to manage.

Hi there,
Generally speaking I recommend prompting your client to create the initial starter site under their account, and then invite you as an additional admin on the site. This will give you full access to do your work, and when the project is complete the handoff is seamless because all you need to do is leave the site (or stay on as an admin if that is their wish) since they are already the “owner of the site” so to speak. You can read more here: Invite people to your site
The other advantage to this is that you can direct them to purchase any upgrades you might need depending on the project. Typically most clients will want a custom URL (as opposed to the “wordpress.com” URL we assign to free sites) for example and we include that ability in all of our plans here.
The advantage of having the client purchase the plan upgrade is that they will already manage the future renewals under their account, and it avoids your need to transfer domain ownership at the end of the project if they just purchase it under their account on day one.
That said, we do have a process for transferring ownership of any site and upgrades, so if you prefer that the client not have access until the end of the project, it is fine to start the site and purchase upgrades under your account, and transfer everything at the end of the project. See: Transfer a Site to Another WordPress.com Account
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
