Building sites for clients
-
Hi..when a client hires you to build them a website..
1) should I build it in their wp account or can I use mine and transfer site to them? what’s best? -
Hey there,
This is more of a personal question. I would say do which ever you prefer. They both have pros and cons but both ways are simple and easy to get done.
Hope this helps.

Hi @loritrimmier – A key element will be the client’s creation of a WordPress.com account. I recommend that be the first step once the working relationship is secured.
If it is a business or organization, it’s important they set up a very generic WordPress.com account. One that can easily be passed to someone else, should the person you built the site with transition to a different role in the business or leave altogether.
With that generic account created, this will make it easier for you to give them access, give them ability to participate/create, and ultimately make them owners of the work once it is complete.

The cleanest way to build a website for someone else is to create a new WordPress.com account (separate from your personal WordPress.com account) and build the site there. As you work in that space you can be confident that you’ll never accidentally impact anything on your personal account.
Because they will by this time have a WordPress.com account, you can invite your client to the site if you need: https://wordpress.com/support/user-roles/ (pay careful attention to the roles)
And once the site is complete, you can “transfer” it over to your client’s account: https://wordpress.com/support/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/
Sounds like a great opportunity! Let us know if you have any other questions about this. :)
