Hey! can I build my website with an already owned domain? is it free or do I have to buy a website plan?

You can have a free site here if you’re happy with a subdomain address ending in wordpress.com. If you wish to use a domain you already own at a site here you’ll need a paid plan to map or transfer that domain.

what if we already bought a domain from wordpress? only domain? then do we still have to map or transfer domain or pay for website plan?

Usually people buy an annual plan as a custom domain is then included free for the first year. Did you definitely buy the domain only right here at WordPress.com? What is the address? Then you’ll need a site and a plan to make that domain the primary one. This thread is tagged to ask a member of staff look at your account.

I didn’t purchased any, I was searching to buy domain and wordpress was giving domain along with other domain sites. I want to ask this of we buy domain from wordpress for one year only domain then can we set up free website on wordpress using that domain ? or does that also require to purchase website plan?

Hi there,
You can purchase an individual domain and use it on your free site. However, that domain will only redirect to the site. If you want to make that domain your site’s primary address you’ll need to upgrade to one of our plans.

@justjennifer: We do have this section of the domain support document that states that in order to have the custom domain set as the primary site address, that you would need one of our paid plans:

Hi helper-heroponriki No, it wasn’t that. It was purchasing a custom domain through WordPress.com and then forward it to a free WordPress.com website, as @fstat described. As I mentioned, there was a promotional email about this sometime last year, but I haven’t been able to find a reference to it in the support site.

@justjennifer Oh, I gotcha. If I recall correctly that was a marketing email letting people know about the ability to purchase a domain without purchasing a plan, because it wasn’t possible prior to that.
It looks like our docs team updated the existing domains support document to reflect the ability to purchase a custom domain that would forward to the free *.wordpress.com URL rather than creating a new one.
