Bulk edit of categories

How do I bulk edit categories, i.e. I want to import many posts, then categorize them under say Category1, them import another xml file of a different set of posts and categorize them as Category2. What’s the most efficient way of bulk renaming the imported posts?
I seem to be able to select multiple posts but bulk renaming doesn’t seem possible?

  • Hi there,

Can you tell me a bit more about what you are trying to set up? Where are you importing from? Another WordPress site, or a site on a different platform? Which site (you have several under your account) are you importing your content to?

If you are trying to “rename” a category that was imported you can do that here: https://wordpress.com/settings/taxonomies/category/

Just click on the ‘…’ icon next to any category to edit the spelling or rename completely. If you change the name or spelling of any category there, that new naming will be updated on all posts that used the old category.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,
I can import all the blogs, so that isn’t a problem. My goal is to have all my blogs under one account, one site, one menu.
When I import a blog, all the posts are marked ‘uncategorized’ so I want to select them all which I can do, but then I want to re-categorize them to a new category I created, say ‘newblog’. Rather than doing each post, one by one, how to I re-categorize them in 3 or less clicks? My plan is then to import another blog, categorize all those posts to another new category say ‘2ndblog’, then move onto another blog, import, bulk recategorize to ‘3rdblog’, etc.
    Make sense?

  • Sure, I get you. Do you still have access to the sites you’re exporting from?

If so here’s what I would do: from each site, go here:
    https://wordpress.com/settings/taxonomies/category

Edit the default to give it the new name.

THEN export, and import into the site.

Or, if you’ve already exported and imported, something like this would do:

    https://wordpress.com/support/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit

Use the quick edit option and select the category for the posts in bulk. You just may need to do a few screens worth, depending on how many blog posts there are. I recommend updating no more than 50 at a time.

Hi thanks for the help! I was able to do it a couple of way, the best being what you suggested, categorize them in the original blog account, then export (posts only makes it cleaner, else you end up with double home, contact and about pages) to a file. Then import and the categories come in automatically. Then I just have to add the category to the menu.
The other way I found was to import and they assumed the uncategorized category. I found I could rename uncategorize to a new category.
I also found that I could not bulk edit posts to change their category by first going to posts and selecting the posts. It would add a new category but in addition to uncategorized. But if I went into Categories first, then selected a category (e.g. uncategorized) I could rename the category and it would apply that change to all the posts in that category. Whew! Thanks everyone.

PS I also found that importing worked for some .xml files by dropping and dragging into the imported but not for others even tho they were all wordpress files. It may have something to do with file size. I finally found that I could drag and drop the .zip files and the importer would work.
Just thought I would pass that on.
