Bummed about stat counter

  • Unknown's avatar

Im bummed to discover that Stat Counter won’t work with WordPress.com – more specifically, that I cannot see a referring link. Consensus is it won’t work on wordpress.com

    Questions:
    1. Is this correct?
    2. I REAAAALY need to see where my link referrals are coming from – not just the country. Does wordpress.com offer a plug in or something to let me see that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey there,

Could you explain a bit further what you need? If you go to you site’s stat page, you can scroll down until you see referrers:
    https://wordpress.com/stats/stylefordorks.com

If you need a different data set that isn’t available on WordPress.com, you may wish to look into self-hosting a WordPress.org site so you can add any SEO plugins you’d like. If you’re not familiar with the differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com, you can read those here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Does wordpress.com offer a plug in or something to let me see that?

Third party plugins cannot be installed on WordPress.com sites. This is a security risk as we cannot vet all outside code and it puts our users, their sites, and our servers at risk.

Plugins are only usable on self-hosted WordPress.org sites.

Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

Well, https://wordpress.com/stats/stylefordorks.com provides data on where my referrals are coming from – but it’s not click specific.

For example, I CONSTANTLY get clicks on a certain blog post – which suggests that maybe it’s been featured or shared somewhere – but I have no idea where.

Does wordpress.com offer that kind of functionality?

    Hey there,

Could you give me an example of one of those posts? I can certainly see if I can look into this. The referrer info should indeed be there for you!

    Thanks :)

Sure! Like in this pic: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/149639/b9b715d456e33868443eb3f45ca6fe43

You can see that the post: Stick Figure Style got 5 views. Every day it gets 5 views, odd considering that It’s from like a YEAR ago. I badly want to know how folks are finding it.

But the only info for referrals is: Search Engines (9) and Facebook (1)

It’s VERY unlikely that people are searching for “Stick Figure Style” – so, where are they coming from? (I just tried it on Google, and my pic did NOT come up) – so the attention is coming from somewhere other than that!

    help!?

    Hey there!

Ah, I see what you mean. You’re absolutely right. The Referrers stats display referrers for the blog as a whole, and cannot be drilled down to a specific page or post.

If this is an integral function for you, you may look into self-hosting your site, and using a stats plugin that covers all your bases.

If you’d like to see a breakdown in the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

I wish I could have been more helpful. Please do let me know if you have other questions. Many thanks!

When people use WordPress.org, where / how do they typically host it?

And…is it a major pain to switch? Would I have to start over?

    Hey there!

…is it a major pain to switch? Would I have to start over?

If you’re interested in moving, this guide will step you through the process of moving your site to a WordPress.org instance:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

As we only support sites hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new site – including the importing of the file – must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:

If you’d like assistance moving your WordPress.com site to WordPress.org, we have a service called Guided Transfer that does all the work for you. Check it out to see if it’s right for you:

When people use WordPress.org, where / how do they typically host it?

There are a multitude of options. We have a few that we recommend, but you don’t need to use these, if you’d like another host:

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!
