Business Directory …. plugin, handcoded or both ?
-
Hello. My first post.
I am new to WordPress and would like to create a “Chamber of Commerce” website. I see that they basically all have a nice techniques for “searching businesses. I have a link to an attractive example that impresses me. http://budachamber.com/member-search
I like the way that the businesses are displayed. Now…. my question is….. Is the code that is used to display both the “Search” and “Display Businesses” possibly a “plugin” available for WordPress? Or was it probably “hand coded” (or both)? I am comfortable with html/css/php/mysql, and I could write my own code and set up my own database, etc, but do not really want to spend the time if there are WordPress plugins available.
As I said, I am just new to WordPress, but that is similar to what I would like to accomplish. I just need to be steered in a direction. I would appreciate any input. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Buffmin2.

We need a link to your blog, starting with http, before we can answer accurately for your blog.

I’m sorry. I just meant to post the question in the forum. Does this mean that I need to create a blog as well? (Don’t mean to sound ignorant).

If you don’t have a blog, the question doesn’t really relate, does it?
We always ask for a URL because there are two kinds of WordPress, and the answer depends on what kind you’re using. For instance, on WP.com blogs, you can’t use plugins at all, so no matter what THAT blog is using, you can’t do that and will have to find a workaround.

Raincoaster. Boy, I must be new! Here is my situation. I have always created my own html/css websites. I would like to make them more dynamic and interractive. I look at WordPress website templates and see how WordPress website templates (similar to Joomla) are full templates with many plugins that are already included, and can also be added.
My goal is to find to find a WordPress website template (to use as a shell… I will mod the css, etc), but if I find one with a nice layout, I would like to start with that.
I saw this attractive Chamber site in texas that was I believe was created in part from a WordPress template (although I might be wrong). The designer adder a nice business directory page. Before I start on my first WordPress website, I am just trying to figure out how so many people create business directory pages (functions). I hope this made sense. It is a full website that I will be creating on a domain that I will be hosting. Thank you for your help. Buffmin

Then you need to be over at WordPress.org, where they can help you. The one thing our blogs here are NOT is modular.
