Business Plans

Hi I currently have a website domain under hosted by GoDaddy and my website is running on GoDaddy editor. While this website is still running, I am planning to design another website on WordPress and then eventually port the domain over to WordPress editor and let the website here under WordPress.

But in order to design the website to its fullest ability, I would need to purchase a business plan. Could I purchase the business plan first and then after designing the website structure and etc, port over the domain from GoDaddy to WordPress and let it run under WordPress editor?

Would there be any complications? For example, I note that before I check out from purchasing the business plan, it shows ‘Business annual subscription for nicewebsitedotcom.wordpress.com (cause currently I’m holding a free version’ but when I port over my actual domain to wordpress ‘nicewebsite.com’, would the business plan transfer to the ‘nicewebsite.com’ domain?

  • Yes :) This is a very common question. Go ahead and build your new site on WordPress.com. Import your content, customize the theme, get it all ready to launch.

Keeping the new site private will help prevent any SEO confusion since you’re going to have the same content on two different addresses.

Once ready, the domain can get connected with one of our plans. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

There’s 2 ways to connect the domain. Either will work fine.

    1. Mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
    2. Transfer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

Write back with more questions :)

    Great!

Are there any alternatives to design the website first without the need to purchase any of the premium plans?

In order to export Wpjelly to Wp, can I do that with a free account?

  • Hi, you can import into a free site, sure. You don’t have to purchase a plan unless you need the features they come with:

    Okay great!

    1) So essentially I can I basically run a website designed from WPJelly and then transfer the domain over to turn it from “private” to “live” yeah?

    2) What are the features that come with it?

  • 1) So essentially I can I basically run a website designed from WPJelly and then transfer the domain over to turn it from “private” to “live” yeah?

Not exactly – a WordPress.com site can be private even with a domain attached: for a site hosted on WordPress.com you can choose whether everyone can see it, or whether only people you give access can see it, regardless of the domain.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

But you can do everything you need to do to get the site ready on the free address we provide, and only switch the domain from your current site over once you’re ready. If you kept the WordPress.com site private while you were working on it, you’ll also need to explicitly set it to public at the point where you connect the domain.

    2) What are the features that come with it?

You can see a breakdown of what’s included in different plans at the link @supernovia gave above. You can also see http://en.support.wordpress.com/plan-features/

To start with, on all plans you get access to live chat, the ability to add your own domain to your site, and ads get removed from your site.

On Premium you then get access to advanced customization options, all our premium themes, and you can display ads on your site to earn income from them.

On Business you can customize your site however you want using plugins and third party themes, and even have access to the site files, database and some server settings directly.

In your first comment here you mentioned you’ll need Business. So, while you can initially start setting things up on a free site, you will need to upgrade to Business before you’ll be able to start installing plugins or a custom theme.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Great!

I understand that all paid plans on WordPress remove “wordpress.com”, if i already have an existing domain, could it run on the website that i created? Or would i still need a paid plan to connect the existing domain for the website to be live and public.

    Cheers

  • Hi there,

You’ll need a plan to be able to use a custom domain with any WordPress.com site.

    1) Does WordPress Business plan provide hosting? Or do I have to get a Separate hosting plan myself.

Basically the current domain I have with GoDaddy does not have a hosting plan because it is attached to a business website builder which has hosting by itself, but it’s live and doing well in terms of SEO ranking.

    2) Do you folks think I should buy a WordPress hosting service through GoDaddy? Or should I get a hosting service through WordPress or other hosting providers.

Every site created in WordPress.com is hosted by us. You do not need to purchase any other hosting.

Do you folks think I should buy a WordPress hosting service through GoDaddy? Or should I get a hosting service through WordPress or other hosting providers.

To clear up any further confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. We, WordPress.com are a cloud-based platform where we manage WordPress sites whereas WordPress.org is a stand-alone software that you can download and self-host with any other hosting.

You can find more details about WordPress.com and WordPress.org on this support page:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

That said, if you create a site here, on WordPress.com, you do not need to buy hosting elsewhere. If you’re thinking about hosting your site with GoDaddy, then you’ll want to download WordPress software (from WordPress.org) and create your site there.
