Buy a domain is mandatory?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I have a new site on wordpress.com and I’d like to launch without a domain, so I’d like the default xxxxxxx.wordpress.com.

Is it possible or I have to buy a domain to make the site public?

    Thanks.

You can have a free site ending in .wordpress.com but may have to adapt the words or have a number after the word or phrase if your first choice address is already taken. You may be pointed towards a paid domain if that is the only way the word or phrase you wish to call your site would be available

Thanks. But I don’t understand if the domain is mandatory to make a site public.

I have created my xxxxx.wordpress.com site, I can login, edit all stuff… But when I click “Launch” there is a form to choose the domain. I cannot make the site public without buying a domain, is it correct? Or I am missing something?
    Thanks.

    Hi there!

You can launch a site with the free WordPress.com address if you want. When you see the page for choosing a domain, you can scroll to the bottom to choose the “Skip purchase” option next to the WordPress.com address. Could you give it a try and let me know how it goes?

In the future, I’d suggest considering upgrading to a WordPress.com plan so that you can use your own custom domain. Using a custom domain has many benefits — such as having a personal brand, SEO presence, and so on.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.
