Buy Button

I used to have a PayPal Buy Button on my poetry website, but when I went to update an email, it wouldn’t let me add it–said that I needed to upgrade? Is an upgrade now required for a PayPal button? (Definitely not worth it for a poet!)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi @jcuello2,

To clarify, when you updated your site, did you try to use the Simple Payments feature, or did you follow the instructions for adding a PayPal button found here?

The Simple Payments feature requires a Premium or Business plan, but the PayPal button is just a bit of HTML that you can add to your posts/widgets.

    Hi Jenny,
I did get the HTML code and when I paste it into HTML and click +add and select Button, a screen pops up saying that I need to upgrade. If I close the screen it won’t let me add the code. I must be missing something. I have done this before–about 3 years ago.

    Hi @jcuello2,

I tried adding an HTML PayPal button to my unpaid WordPress site, and was able to do so without a screen popping up prompting me to upgrade.

Are you using the code below to add your PayPal button?

    <a href="PayPal Payment URL" target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc"><img src="PayPal button image URL" alt=""></a>

Also, when you say you updated your email, do you mean you changed your WordPress email or your PayPal email?

If you changed your PayPal email, the screen prompting you to upgrade may be from PayPal. PayPal routes payments to email addresses, and only allows you to create payment or donation buttons if you have a Business or Premier PayPal account. By changing your PayPal email address, you may have removed the credentials necessary to create a donate button.

If your PayPal email/info has remained the same, can you provide some additional information about where you are trying to add the PayPal button? Are you trying to add it to a page, a post, a widget, or somewhere else?

  • Hi there,

To be clear, you can’t use the Add PayPal Button option in the editor to do this. That is only available for Premium and Business Plan users.

To update your existing button you need to manually update the code as @jennysihua indicated above, and as explained here:

    Hi all,

Yes, I changed both my wordpress email and my PayPal email this summer. I neglected, however, to update the email that accompanied the seller info on PayPal. I realized that only recently when someone was unable to purchase a book (that tells you how seldom it’s used). I went in to update that email and then received the popup to upgrade. I tried both suggested methods to no avail. It looks like I am out of luck because I switched email accounts on PayPal??? And now can no longer sell a few poetry books on my website…?

I updated my PayPal account to business and went through the steps in the above link. Again, when I click add HTML a wordpress popup appears saying I need to upgrade. Both of the links shared above state that I need to upgrade my WordPress account, but Jenny says this is not necessary. I am confused. I did use the email tab from PayPal and inserted the code there between the quotation marks on the code in the directions. I must still be doing something wrong.

  • Where exactly on your site is the button you’re trying to update? I don’t see any PayPal buttons on your site.

Again, when I click add HTML a wordpress popup appears saying I need to upgrade

You should not be clicking anything. If you’re using the + button in the editor, you’re not updating your existing PayPal button, you’re trying to add the simple payments button that is only available in the Premium and Business Plan.

To add/edit the basic PayPal button as explained at those links, open the editor and click the HTML tab at the top where it says Visual/HTML. That opens the HTML editor where you can paste in the code from PayPal.

on the page “Books and Chapbooks,” the 4th item had a button below the title. I deleted it as it was defunct (led sellers to an invalid email address).

Yes, when I click the HTML tab (as you instruct in your last paragraph here), I then see code and the bar with options. When I click +add–the popup appears. It will not let me paste the code. It only gives the options to upgrade or leave the page.

When I click the HTML tab, I see all the code from the page…are you saying to simply paste this code at the top of that code and not use +add to create a button?

Aha, yes….that is it! Figured it out. The missing information was what I would see and where it would be pasted.

    Thanks for your help. Success.

  • Just replace the old code with the new code, yes. The button you add via the + icon is something completely different.

Glad you figured it out. I can also see your button now, and it’s taking me to PayPal when I click it, so everything is working now :)
