buying a domain for a friend?

Hi! I have a friend that has expressed interest in starting a blog and he has a great idea for a name as an idea. He hasn’t followed through, and I thought a cool gift would be to purchase the domain name for him. Can you show me how to do this, so that it will be for him, and I won’t have any admin role in his site?

Actually it’s very nice that you want to help your friend to have domain. But in my understanding, you can’t purchase the domain name for him unless you login to his account. Of course, the other way is that you can purchase the domain somewhere else and map it.
