Buying a domain name for my blog

  Hello i have a blog already pretty well established and I am interested in buying a domain name for it. I have been told that this will cause my SEO to dip drastically. Is this true?

  To be clear, my questions are the following:
  What will happen the the authority my blog enjoys at this time?
  Will I lose this authority or does WordPress insure that this authority will be transported to the new domain?
  How exactly does WordPress manage the redirect to the new domain?
