Buying a domain name versus self hosting a blog
-
I’m strongly considering buying a domain name through wordpress.com. About a year ago I tried the self hosting thing and it didn’t work out so well.
I was just wandering if buying a domain name is worth it? Is it better than self hosting?

I am a long time blogger. I have been answering questions here for 8 years. I have two blogs here on their own domains hosted by WordPress.com and I am happy as a clam. I did previously self-host and found that it was not worth the money, time and effort to continue to self host. Without doubt, I am biased towards purchasing your own domain. Blogs on their own domains communicate the message that the blogger is serious about blogging, serious enough to purchase a domain. I am biased towards remaining on WordPress.com hosting. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/10/30/7-reasons-why-i-like-wordpress-com-hosting/

You don’t need a domain to become a successful blogger but it helps. Blogs on their own domains communicate the message that the blogger is serious about blogging, serious enough to purchase a domain. Whether you are a professional blogger, a business blogger or a hobby blogger, if you are committed to developing your brand by producing quality content over the long-term, then I recommend getting your own domain and a no-ads upgrade from the get go.

All About Domains http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/all-about-domains/In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog. See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
