Buying a domain that is in Redemption Period

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I have a domain registered with Netfirms and hosted here on WordPress.
The domain expired and is now in redemption period. Netfirms ask me to pay 80$ to get it back.

Question: Can I buy again here through WordPress and book it so that nobody else will get it?

    Thank you.

Not really if you are really using Netfirms as your registrar. The domain needs to be released to the wild before you can buy it again on WordPress.COM. the registrar is under no obligation to release the old domain name, they might auction it off to a squatter who will hold it hostage, someone else might get the name also.

There are some firms that will try and get expiring domain names for you, but they will charge for that service and no guarantee that they will be successful and that would leave the name registered with a company other than WordPress.COM

If the name is important to you – deal with Netfirms – the $80.- extra charge is normal.

Also WordPress.COM is not set up to accept incoming domain name transfers

this is flagged for the staff they might have other tips

  • Hi there,

@auxclass pretty much said it all. Your best bet at this point is to pay the extra charge to Netfirms to get it out of redemption. It is similar to what we would charge if the domain was in redemption with our registrar.

You can take the chance and wait for the domain to be released for re-registering with WordPress.com, but it is indeed a risk. Someone could purchase it before you, or it could be auctioned off.

Again, I’d pay the redemption fee with Netfirms and use the domain with WordPress.com via domain mapping.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

So my url expired just over a month ago and I think it might still be in redemption. How do I go about paying that to you folks to just get my url back? I didn’t see any method of doing that.

  • @a10centsuperhero,

Our records show that smashingtheadam.com expired 45 days ago on 12-18-2015.

Domain expiration is a lengthy and complicated process that takes about 80 days. During this time, your domain may be put up for auction or sold on back-order.

You can learn more about domain expiration here:

    Domain Expiration

The good news is that we may still be able to recover your domain if it has not yet been deleted or purchased by someone else.

A late renewal fee of $80 will be added to the regular price of renewal. This fee is charged by the domain registry and is not one that we can waive.

The total price will be $106, which is $26 for the regular renewal, plus the $80 late renewal fee. Please reply back if you are interested in paying the amount, and I will send you a manual payment.

If we are unable to recover your domain, your payment will be refunded. If you do not wish to pay the $80 fee, you may let the domain expiration process continue and attempt to register the domain again at the regular price, once it has completely expired.

Please note that someone else may purchase the domain first, in which case you will be unable to register it again, but if you prefer this option, just let us know and we’ll be happy to provide you further instructions.

    Thanks!

Yes! I please send me a manual renewal!

  • Hi there.

I sent you the manual payment. It’s for $106, not $96 Sorry, my math was off – I majored in English. =|

  • I’ll keep you updated as to when I hear back from our registrar.

    Thanks!

  • Hey Adam!

I have received notice that our registrar can redeem your domain. So, once you pay the redemption fee, I can get it set back up under your account.

    Keep me updated. Thanks!

How do you bid on an expired domain that you did not previously own?
