Buying the $17 domain w/o .wordpress.: will my links need to change?

  If I purchase the $17-per option to have my blog shift from x.worpress.com to x.com, will previous links to my x.wordpress.com site from within my blogs and from other sites automatically take me to the new x.com upgrade site? or will I have to go in and change all of those????

  Nope, all of your links will automatically change from x.wordpress.com to x.com :)

  The domain mapping doesn’t change your underlying .wordpress.com URL, instead it just covers it with your custom domain:
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/
