  Is it possible to add a shopping cart to my free blog or do I need to upgrade?

  No it is not. The code needed to implement a shopping cart is not allowed here for security reasons. Also, selling things is a little restricted here by the Terms of Service. You can promote and sell things that you actually make yourself, such as photos, paintings, crafts, books you wrote yourself, etc.

  For crafts, pottery, jewelry and such, many people set up an Etsy shop and then link to that from their blog here and let the purchases run through Etsy.
