Cab’t transfer to domain host

I purchased a domain through DreamHost in order to host this particular site I had created for free through wordpress.com. I tried following the instructions on how to transfer the site but it requires some sort of payment. Is there no way to transfer this wordpress site onto my new domain without paying?

No I’m afraid transferring or connecting a domain you purchased elsewhere to a site here requires a WordPress.com paid plan.

Can I select a paid plan, then transfer the site and then cancel the paid plan within the time frame for a refund?

Are you building a site here at WordPress.com or at Dreamhost? You can export the content (not the address) of your free unlaunched WordPress.com site (if you have any that is) without paying anything here if you are already paying Dreamhost for a site there.

Yes I was. But I couldn’t figure out the process so I just cancelled my dreamhost site and I guess I have to find another option.

You can have a free site with an address ending in .wordpress.com here forever. But if you want a custom domain address then you need to pay someone be it here or Dreamhost for domain and hosting thereof.

You’d be transferring a Dreamhost domain here (provided you’d owned it 60 days), not transferring a site and as soon as you cancelled you’d lose the domain and revert to the free address.
