  I just build a site, but I need to add an interactive calendar that allows the public to add events.

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  This is not something you can easily do with WordPress.com. I would create a page called Calendar and invite your readers to submit their events using a form. When you receive a new event, you can simply copy-paste it in your page content. Does it help ?

  Would a public google calendar achieve what you need?
