Calendar for booking an appointment

    Hello, WordPress support.
I am completely new user to WordPress and unfortunately I am having issues by orienting myself with the functionalities and capabilities. Hoping that you could help.
    Here is my case:
In its most summarized form I am trying to do a website which will allow users to book an appointment.
    1. I would like for them to have capability to select time slot in a particular days as well as observing the already booked time slots. I am observing that there is ‘appointment form’ but it does not cover my case.
    2. When a user is booking an appointment to provide full name (first and last), email and phone number. Is there a DataBase behind the functionality in which the whole information will be stored? I am asking for this because would like to have different user with ADMIN role which could have access to the information for all booked appointments as well as potentially change/delete them.
Is there already implemented component/plug in that could be used for my case? If so, could you point me to the correct one?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

    Hi there:

To avoid confusion, there are three different “WordPress” at play here:

    1. The free, open-source WordPress software which can power your website.
    2. WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
    3. WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software and with whom you’re contacting now.

If you plan on hosting your site here at WordPress.com, you would need to upgrade to the Business or eCommerce plan to be able to install third-party plugins.

While we can’t advise specifically on individual plugins, there are options out there – both free and paid – that you could use. The WordPress.org plugin directory has a number of booking plugins. If you’re also planning on using WooCommerce, they offer some booking extensions.

NOTE: we have not tested or vetted any of these plugins or extensions so you would need to do your own due diligence to make sure the plugin or extension would be compatible with your website and its configuration.

If you plan on hosting your site elsewhere, I’d recommend reaching out to the WordPress.org community for guidance:

    I hope that clarifies things!

Thank you for the detailed answer! Really appreciate that!
I think that almost everything is clear to me expect one thing: how could I notice the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com? Is the main difference just in the suffix of the domain or it’s a completely different site with its own development console in which I should make a registration? Also, by saying “2. … where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider” did you mean that I could make my file there and after that “download” it somehow in order to provision/deploy it in a personal hosting?

  • Hi there,

Your two questions are closely related, so I’ll try to answer them together if that is OK.

I think it will help to explain that in the early days of blogging, WordPress was invented as a piece of free software that you could download and install on any host. You could use this free tool to create and manage a website, totally DIY. That version of WordPress still exists, and if you get a WordPress site from GoDaddy, Bluehost, Hostgator, or any other “traditional web host,” this is the version they use. The free, unlocked, very-DIY version of WordPress that you can download from WordPress.org.

This version allows you to upload any plugin you wish, but it’s a very DIY way of managing your website and does not come with support (since it’s free software), so it’s not for everyone.

Because of this, WordPress.com was started as a service so that you don’t have to find a host, set up your own software, or anything like that. We take care of that, so all you have to do is sign up and get to building your site. We also provide in-house support so we can answer any questions you have instead of turning to Google.

Is the main difference just in the suffix of the domain, or it’s a completely different site with its own development console in which I should make a registration?

You can have a site with a custom address (one without “wordpress.com” in the URL), so there is not usually an outward sign to signify the difference. Really they’re very similar except for the part where we manage more things here that you would normally do yourself if you were to “self-host” your WordPress site.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
