Calendar Integration Options

I’m wanting to have the website calendar be able to integrate with google calendar or another personal calendar service. I’ve looked at two options:
1 – integrate a google calendar with wordpress using API keys.
PROBLEM = this only allows one email to create a calendar. It erases the ‘ajax event calendar’ plugin that we currently use.
2 – Considered ‘The events calendar’ plugin.
PROBLEM = it seems from what I’ve read online that the integration isn’t automatic. Eg – if a date changes the start time it won’t automatically update in someone’s calendar who has signed up to integrate. Each person has to integrate the website calendar regularly.

Is there an option for what I’m wanting? I’ve read this thread:
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/multiple-calendars-on-same-website/
but did not feel like I found my answer.

    Thanks for the help!!

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

Can you tell me, other than showing events what you’re looking to do with the calendar?

For instance, are you sending invites or selling purchases for tickets?

    Many thanks.

    Hi,

It will almost certainly only be showing events. It would rarely (and only potentially) also be used to procure RSVP’s to said events. But I doubt that would be very likely to happen.
As it is we have the ajax plugin for our website. But we also have different departments with their own calendars that get sent to specific groups of people apart from the website calendar.

I’m hoping to make the website integrate with google to keep all the calendars centralized and communicate together (ie – input an event through a gmail and it automatically also updates to website). And also allow individuals to integrate that to their personal emails.

I’ve also considered using a 3rd party calendar and just imbedding that into the website.

    Thanks for your timely help!!

    Thank you!

  • Thanks! So for what it’s worth, the services here at WordPress.com just have a few built-in calendar options. For this, we’d just be embedding Google Calendars like so:
    https://wordpress.com/support/google-calendar/

Instead of using an API key or email, you’d just copy the sharing URL and embed that.

I’m not positive how well all of the calendars would display on a single page, though, if that’s what you’re going for. It would basically just be embedding each individual Google Calendar. I’m trying to picture how you’d like that on your site — would you have several calendars, one for each group? Or one master calendar that has all of the events for different groups in it?

Also, I noticed you mentioned the WordPress.org thread. FYI, these forums are specific to WordPress.com’s services. Here’s the difference:

Ok. So if I were to switch to the Google calendar embed it would do away with the current ajax calendar?

Yes I would hope to have all calendars displayed on one page/calendar. I don’t think I would have several calendars. The current ajax one we use has all the different groups’ calendars on one, they are just color coded. So one group is red, another blue, etc. So, if there is someway to make that happen that would be great. But it would be ok to also have all the events from all groups integrate into a personal email. They would then just ignore events that didn’t pertain to them. More like you described a master calendar.

  • Hi there,

We’re limited in how we can help because we don’t actually host your site on WordPress.com. Your host (GoDaddy) uses the open-source variant of the WordPress platform which functions differently than what we offer on our managed WordPress service. Because of this we don’t have access to your server files or the ability to take a closer look.

I think to get help on this I would recommend turning to the open-source forums at wordpress.org (this is the variant GoDaddy uses) as they may be better able to help. As @supernovia mentions on WordPress.com we have just a few calendar options which would not apply to your situation. You can find help in the WordPress.org forums here: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/

I have however heard good things about The Event Calendar plugin though. It may be worth reaching out to their support team to see if they can clarify wether the default plugin can sync with Google Calendar as you need. It’s possible they may have a workaround that is not mentioned in their documentation since your situation is fairly unique.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction!

    Ok. Thank you.

Well the reason I thought it would be your support team is because all I’m using currently is a plugin (ajax calendar) for wordpress. Which makes me think it’s from wordpress, not GoDaddy… So, is there a plugin specific support team that might answer these questions?

I will reach out to the Event Calendar support team for clarity.

The last option I’m considering is using a 3rd party calendar and embedding that into the website. However, I’m talking with that company’s support team if that could happen. Thanks!
