Calling Akismet from an external application is painfully slow

  I’m using the php4 akismet class found here http://miphp.net/blog/view/php4_akismet_class
  Calls to akismet can take some time tho, around a minute for the response to come back. Is this normal? I’m using it on contact forms and am thinking I might need to do some background processing instead of an the spot call as this is currently taking too long.

  Any help would be appreciated
