Can’t change my header picture

I have tried several time to change my header picture on my home page and the change does not take place, i have changed the dim to 2650 x 640 pixels as suggested still no luck, How do I change the picture to what I want for my home page? I am using the free site until I get set on blogging, need help. Also my headers for the other pages have changed; however, they were cropped to a size I didn’t want. and I can not edit the About menu. so I have several questions that I need help on.

ManFromMars: thank you will give it a try, though I was doing it right; however, I see that I may have missed some of the steps.
I question, I am on the “Free” site while I learn about my blog and then will most likely transfer to a paid site. QUESTION: will this effect this customization?

When you change from “free” to “paid” later…if you continue to use the same theme, that kind of “customization” should not be affected.

Yes. Note that the relevant information for each theme is found on the detailed theme description page and the relevant information is exactly what the size of the custom header image for each theme is, whether or not flexible headers, and featured images are a theme feature, etc.
Every theme has a detailed theme description page and this one is at https://wordpress.com/themes/gateway/ That’s where set up instructions for it are found. The live demo site is at https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/

I have tried what was shown in the video, the issue is the header image does change for the “About”, “contact” and “Blog” pages; however, the Header Image for the “home” page does NOT change. Why? What am I doing wrong?

That site is a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting, hosted by GoDaddy.com not by wordpress.COM.
That site is not on our servers. You are posting to the wrong support forum.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, support docs and support forums, and many people get confused about the two.

I have really made mess of this: I am on photographybymichaelw.wordpress.com not the other URL, that is my website, not sure how it is there, where do I change the URL back to the correct website for my blog?

Timethief: thank you, I decided that since the header on all the pages but “home” changed to the photo I wanted. I really didn’t need the “home” page at this time so i deleted it . I do appreciate your help, it is very much appreciated.
