Can a dead blog URL be “freed” ?

    Hello,

I want to create a wordpress blog, but unfortunately, all the URLs I could think of were already taken by empty blogs, blogs created years and years ago, and containing only 1 post, the default welcome post, without any kind of personalization of any sort.

For instance, an example among dozens of others, but the one with the cutest domain name : http://imagine.wordpress.com/

Do you think there is a possibility the wordpress.com team could “release” one of these adresses, when we report it ?

Thanks a lot if you can share your opinion on this matter,

    Best regards,
    Sabin

No, there is no chance of them releasing a blog that exists, whether it has been used in a long time or not. The thing is, there are a portion of those blogs that people with self-hosted wordpress blogs set up so that they could have an API key to install Akisment and/or the wordpress blog stats plugin on their self-hosted blog.

They also will not recycle blog names on blogs that people have deleted: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/recycling-blog-names/

What you can do is leave a message on the blogs and ask the person if they would be willing to part with it and transfer it to you.

That doesn’t leave much hope to release good URLs, even in a distant future, unfortunately, but I guess there’s no helping it, then.

Thank you TheSacredPath for your detailed answer :)

You’re very welcome. I expect at some point in the future, wordpress will have to release at least some of the deleted names, but that probably will not be soon.
