can a domain bought in worpress be attached to a FREE wordpress website?

  I currently have a free website in wordpress. I did not subscribe to any hosting plan at all. Now, I am planning to buy a domain name inside wordpress itself. Once I buy this domain name inside wordpress, can I attach this domain name to that FREE Website that I created in wordpress?

  Once I pay for that domain name, will I be required to buy a hosting plan in order for me to attach that domain to the website?

  You’ll need a paid plan, any paid plan, to use a custom domain as your primary address: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address

  And, since all paid plans include a free domain registration, I recommend starting with a paid plan instead: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
