Can a wordpress blog be analyzed with Google Analytics?
-
Hello,
I would like to test Google Analytics with my WordPress blog.
The thing is that Google Analytics asks me to copy some code on my blog page. But it doesn’t seem to work. Anyone found a way to make it work? Thanks for your help :) !

No, we can’t run Google Analytics on our blogs, because WP.com is already running it on all of ours, and there can be only one install per blog. And they don’t share that info with us, alas!
-
The blogs already use Google Analytics. That’s where your stats come from. There’s no way to add anything further, sorry.

So if I host myself my wordpress, then WordPress.com wont use Google Analytics to get traffic infos on my blog?
-
If you have your own domain name, and are self-hosted using the software from wordpress.org, then you don’t have the wordpress.com restrictions. If you get your own domain, and them the wordpress.com domain mapping to point your new domain to your wordpress.com blog, you are still hosted on .com, and have the .com restrictions.

tesacredpath thanks for the clarifications !
I have a question: what’s the point of using the domain mapping from wordpress if you own your own domain name ?
-
Because you can’t attach that domain name to a blog hosted on WP.com and with all the advantages thereof unless you buy the domain mapping upgrade.
-
There are advantages to being on wordpress.com. With your own domain and host, you are the one responsible for all installation, maintenance, upgrades and troubleshooting. In addition, with wp.com, your blog is on a number of servers (redundancy) so if one goes down, your blog is still up and nothing is lost. If you are self-hosted, your blog is only one one server. Some web hosts do back ups and some and if the server your blog is on fails, it could be days before it is back up.
The other main argument for wordpress.com is that you have this forum. It’s the best around with a bunch of very knowledgeable volunteers on it virtually all the time.

OH I see what you mean ! That’s a cool feature !
So if I got it right: you can rent/buy a domain name for 5dollars a year like http://www.ilovepizzas.com and then use the domain mapping thing, and your WP blog will be available for everyone using the adress: http://www.ilovepizzas.com ?
-
Bingo. But the url would be http://ilovepizzas.com – still no www needed.
If you buy the domain name and the mapping at the same time, the total would be $15. Separately, they’re $10 each.

I don’t know why google stats doesn’t work with wordpress.com. Sitemeter stats will work. It seems like both google & sitemeter stats work the same way and provide about the same info. The presentation is just a little different. I’m not complaining. WordPress stats are OK. But, some of the post that I’ve read from WP people don’t make sense. It appears no other third party stat provider will work with the WP stats. But, this is not true. It appears Sitemeter works just fine on my WordPress.com blog. http://www.homebuyersadvocate.wordpress.com
