Can Adblock block WordPress Plugins?

Does anyone know if adblock can “block”, or circumvent wordpress plugins?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’ve used Adblock Plus and have never noticed any effect on the default plugins. Since no plugins may be added to a WordPress.com webiste, the question appears to fall out of the realm of this support forum which addresses only issues regarding WordPress.com accounts and websites.

Perhaps I misread the question. If you refer only to the default WordPress.com plugins, then my answer is

I’ve used Adblock Plus [for several years (I forgot to add)] and have never noticed any effect on the default plugins.

But I’ve never attempted to add a filter that might block WordPress.com default plugins.

To off-set the costs of providing free hosting to millions of bloggers, WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. If the ads then provided you see this small About These Ads link what you are seeing is WordPress.com generated advertising and you cannot choose which advertisements will appear on your site. http://en.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

Any other ads appearing to you are not placed by WordPress.com. In that case they are being placed there by software on your own computer or browser. These ads are sometimes caused by malware or a virus, but more often it is due to a browser extension or toolbar that you may have installed in your browser.

These sites have further explanation and suggestions for eliminating the ads:

The only way to have all ads removed from your wordpress.COM hosted blog is to purchase a No-Ads upgrade.

    @ timethief,

Hi. Hope you are well. : )

I’m not trying to block WordPress.com ads, or advocate that practice. I use Adblock principally for the many commercial sites I visit. Sports and music sites, online retailers, etc. It possible to disable the service on selected sites, or on specific pages. But I normally leave activated all the time, everywhere, except on specific sites where I’ve determined that it will cause something to be blocked that I want to view.

I interpret the OP as a query as to whether it is possible to block, circumvent, or disable one or more facets of WordPress.com’s “built-in plug-in functionality,” as the list of widgets, services, etc. are referrred to in the Plugins support page.

Yes @musicdoc1, thanks. That is exactly what my question is! I want to know if it’s possible for those millions of adblock users to blog a plugin on my website (for whatever reason).

    @ sahilco,
Okay. You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention. Staff may be able to answer that question definitively. The wait time for a response is variable.

    Hi sahilc0,

AdBlock and similar plugins work by searching for content blocks known to be from advertising networks. For example, images, flash embeds, cookies, etc. If a user is running an ad blocker on their site it will block the ads we run on WordPress.com to keep the free features free.

Did you have a specific concern or plugin you were worried about. Also to clarify, when you say “plugin” you are referencing a built in feature of WordPress.com, correct?

    @bdukes

Thanks! For example – this Flickr plugin. Could the entire thing be stopped from loading?

    Hi sahilc0,

Yes, a browser extension/add-on such as AdBlock can prevent any images or JavaScript from loading. Simply put, this means it would be possible to add a rule/filter to stop any images from Flickr (or even WordPress.com itself) from loading on a page.

It’s important to point out that these rules/filters are controlled by the end user as well as filter sets maintained by the developers of the plugin. As these changes are opt-in by the user and not controlled by WordPress.com we are unable to prevent a user from blocking content on your site with an extension/Add-on such as AdBlock.
