Can Advertisement areas be moved?
-
Hi,
I just noticed today that my site has an Advertisement area in the worst possible place – right above my navigation column. I don’t mind having advertisements – I just don’t like the spot it is in. It keeps visitors from seeing the Category List right away – they have to scroll about half a page. Can this Advertisement section be moved? I don’t see it on the template. Had I known it was going to be in that spot, I wouldn’t have picked that template. :/Thanks in advance!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I just read that this is an issue with the staff experimenting with ad placement. Adding the tag “modlook” to this thread, as per instructions. Thanks!

Hi there,
Ads can be removed by upgrading to one of our paid plans. On free sites we show ads to all logged out visitors and some logged in visitors.
We don’t show ads on theme demo pages, as whether ads appear on your site or not, and where, depends on your site plan, not on your theme.

Hi @kokkieh,
The ad section has not been on my site until this week. And I’ve read in other support posts with tag “modlook” that this is a common problem because staff was experimenting with ad placements. And usually a staff person corrects the templates. I don’t know if they regularly check for the tag, so I hope you or a moderator can bring my issue to the attention of a staff person. Thanks! :-) -
@kokkieh, Sorry, I didn’t realize you were staff. Do you know what I’m talking about – maybe I’m not being clear. A few days ago, several people posted that an advertisement section popped up on their blogs that were not there before, and it wasn’t in the best of places. The same thing happened to me. In their post, someone from Staff modified their templates to move the ads. That is all I am requesting. Unfortunately, I can’t find those posts anymore, so I don’t know which staff member it was that helped. Do you know? Thanks!

We have always shown ads on free sites. We don’t always show ads to people who are logged into a WordPress.com account, which is why you might not have seen it before, but logged out visitors to your site have always seen ads at the bottom of every post and page, and below the first post on the blog page. Ads in the sidebar are new, but also intentional.
There has been some cases where the sidebar ads cause problems on a site, causing weird content overlaps, or appearing in the footer instead. Those cases we are reporting so our developers can fix them. But in the case of your site the sidebar ad is not causing any such issue that I can see, so there is nothing to fix.

@kokkieh Thank you for your reply. When I am not logged into the site, I see the header that says “Advertisement” and then a big blank area before it gets to the Category List. If Advertisements are not showing, can the blank area at least be shrunken? Or have the section below the Category List? Like I said, I have no problems with ads. It’s just that spot is a terrible spot. It really messes up the overall look :(

If the ads block loads blank it’s because the actual ad code is not loading in your browser. Do you have any ad-blocker extensions running in your browser?
I see an ad there if I view your site, as do other people I’ve asked to check:

We’ve had several people give that feedback, and it’s under discussion, but for now there is no way to move that ad block.

You’ve ruined the free sites with your ads! Yours’ is pure greed. Make blogs directly paid and remove free. Greedy assholes !!!
-
I have no idea who this person is
* puts @metal666blade in a box and sits on it *@kokkieh I just noticed the Advertisement section is now below the Category List! Thanks to all of you guys for considering our feedback. :-D
-
@kokkieh. After years of being adfree on my old wordpress site I attempted to sort out the new DNS configuration request. Bad move! now half page advertising has creeped onto the page. Seem’s like I’ve alerted someone or something as this was not there before. Could be time to move on. Not because I may have to pay something, but the covert way it was applied. Dont what this happening in the future. I did not have ads on this site since 2006 as has been suggested.

The team has made some adjustments, but we are still testing so the placement might not yet be permanent. I’ll relay your feedback, though.
We have always shown ads on WordPress.com, but you only see them very rarely if you are logged in, and even less often when viewing your own site. They have always been visible to logged-out visitors on your site, https://carloprey.wordpress.com/, though.

After 8 years I moved my blog in Blogger because of your ads!!!
There are no ads. You can use adwords. Can redesign your blog for free!!!
Much better choice than WordPress.com!!! -
@metal666blade – Oh, I thought you were cracking a joke earlier or being sarcastic. I just migrated to WP from Blogger because Google tracks everything you do online. I would rather have ads than be tracked.
-
I’m not joking! I’m not already deleted my wordpress.com blog but I’m thinking about that. I don’t mind to be tracked by Google. WordPress ads in most cases are pure malware and leads to infected sites!
In the beginning there wer only 2 ads below post. Now there are 3-4 in front page 4 on post page. Large clip loads below post.
When a visitor enters my site he sees several stupid ads instead of content! I’m very disappointed with WordPress! I’m sure thath I’m not the only one. They will loose many bloggers with their greed!!! -
WordPress ads in most cases are pure malware and leads to infected sites! Now there are 3-4 in front page 4 on post page. Large clip loads below post.
We do not serve ads containing malware, and there is a button on the ads themselves allowing you to report inappropriate ads. The only places where we place ads are at the bottom of the first post on the front page, below the content on regular posts and pages, and as of recently in the site sidebar, though this might vary by theme.
I see no ads at all on the front page of your site, https://metalniat.wordpress.com/, as the theme you are using doesn’t contain a sidebar and doesn’t display post content on the front page. So that particular theme does not allow for displaying ads on the front page at all. All I see are the featured images of your posts displayed in a grid the way your theme is designed, and the widgets in your site footer.

On a single post I see only the regular two ad blocks below the post content, as shown in this screen shot:

If you are seeing other sites besides those, they are not coming from us, but are most likely being inserted by a hidden browser toolbar or some other add-on in your browser itself.
-
Yes, you have missed to ruin this theme front page. Pictoricco now is left the only theme without fron ads. Go fast and report it to your “ad” team.
3 weeks ago there was such malware ad. On a post page there are 2 small ads below content and appears a video clip. It’s not form my browser but from your ad team!!! I upload a picture to my file galley! My browser is not hijacked! Video clip appears on many wordpress.com free sites. I”ve checked this! -
That video ad should not appear. Advertisers submit new ads every day, so we’re not able to approve each one manually. We do have filters in place to block ads like this, but as with any filter, it’s always possible to find away around it. This is a case where an ad managed to evade our filters. All ad networks, including Google AdSense, are struggling with this issue.
If we can determine exactly where the ad is coming from and in which circumstances it appears, we might be able to block it. Can you please provide us the following information to help us do that:
- Your device/browser and operating system.
- Your IP address – take a screen shot of it on the site, whatismyip.com, and upload that to your media library at My Site ->Media. I can view it there so you don’t have to share it somewhere public
- The exact URL of the page/post that showed the ad.
- The URL that the ad takes you to.
- Any other information on the circumstances in which it appears, e.g. does it happen when you type a link directly in your browser, click on the link in an email/social media, etc.
-
The video ad appears on all free sites with wordpress.com domain and on all browsers in which I’m not logged in wordpress. It pops up from behind the 2 small ads on a post page. When click skip ad it dissapears agan behind them. Thats all. The video plays with max sound if you touch it wit your mouse. It’s not only on my site, it’s on all free wordpress sites. So the problem is in your site!
The problem with WordPress is that the ads on free sites are too many!
