Can be showed only a few words of each post in the home page?

    Hi everybody.

I´m just wondering if it´s possible to show only the first 100 words (i.e.) of each post published in the home page of my blog, making the rest of the content visible in a new window when pushing a button or a link with a text such “read more”, etc.

    Thank you in advance.

When writing a lengthy post there is an option to having the whole post appear on the front page of your blog. You can break the text and have the remaining text appear on another page. The option is called “the more tag”.

There is no automatic way to do this at wordpress.com. You must insert a “more tag” into each post.

Only one theme at wordpress.com I know of the Hemingway theme always displays only excerpts from two posts side-by-side on the front page. In other themes more tag must be added using either the visual rich text editor, the standard editor or hand coding it into each post you that you wish to break the text into smaller segments in. The Fadtastic theme displays the most recent post in it’s entirety and linked titles to all other posts.

    (1) If you are using the visual rich text editor then the icon number to use is #13 and you use it wherever you want the text break to occur.

    (2) If you are using the standard editor click the [more] button wherever you want the text break to occur.

    (3) If you are hand coding type in <!–more–> wherever you want the text break to occur.

    (4) If you do not like the text that the theme is hardcoded to provide when you use the more tag you can change it by hand coding in
<!–more your text goes here more!–>.

Thank you very much for your help. It was enough.

    YAY! A happy camper! You’re welcome. :)
    Issue “resolved”. :)

I, too, am looking for the way to do that, and I saw the icon 13 message in the FAQ. But when I tried it, there was a small, narrow box brought up in my post that said “more”. But how could I type the rest of my post in the “more” box? Does the rest of the post – all of it – automatically disappear to another linked page?

Also, how would I insert a “read more” if I wanted to expand a little on only one point in my post? Or is that not the intent of the “more” button?

That’s not the intent of the “more” button.

The box you are talking about is an image. Just position your cursor below it to continue your post; you don’t need to type anything into the box. If in doubt, write the whole post then insert the “more” tag wherever you want it when you’re finished.

Please note, that the “more” tag will not show up when you preview the post. The only time you see “read more” in a post is on the main page. It doesn’t work on pages at all.

Thanks, judyb12, I’ll try that with my next post. I guess I wasn’t brave enough to do it and check after I had published it to see how it came out.
