Can copying of posts be blocked?

  • Unknown's avatar

There is a certain website in the Philipines that is copying entire posts from my blog, then posting them on their website under various categories. Is there any way I can stop my posts from being copied? I don’t mind a link to my blog, but am irritated by the apparent theft of my writing and photography. Any assistance or suggestions are appreciated very much!

In short: you can’t prevent your posts from being copied, but you can help shut down the spam sites that do it.

The site that is ‘scrapping’ is Pinoybusiness.org, which is hosted by GoDaddy.com out of New York, NY. I have contacted their abuse department, using the samples you linked to me as guidelines. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
If possible, please add Pinoybusiness.org to your list…
    Thanks for your kind reply.

Godaddy.com has suspended the ‘scrapping’ site, Pinoybusiness.org, pending resolution of my filed complaint. They can either remove my content, or file a counter-complaint. At the time of this writing, their site is off line.
Thanks for your assistance! I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Another place that usually helps with issues is digitalfuntown.com
It has helped me a number of times when I had similar issues. It will allow you to resolve any issues you have with copying, and it guarantees to maintain original content.

    Stop spamming the forum.

I am not a web developer but have some friends that are and am aware of PHP code that can be implemented for high security sites. Such as anti hacking, firewalls or just copyright protection. Some scripts allow the complete locking of copying site so the only way to actually copy content would be to take screenshots using third part software which is time consuming and not practical. I don’t know of any ways this can be implemented in WordPress blogs. Hopefully someone will take note of this or post if you know more on this.

Some websites I visit use actual text but when clicking and dragging on it you cannot copy it because it just does nothing.

@efsl, sploggers use either screen scraping techniques which clicking/dragging stuff (done using JavaScript) are not valid protections. Anyone can turn off JavaScript to get around that and scrappers just parse text and not the HTML presentation anyways. Most of the sploggers just use everyone’s web feed/rss feed since that (XML)’s easier to parse than poorly formatted HTML pages. If WP.com provided a way to turn off the RSS feed, then that would give the bloggers a little more control. However, a blog with a RSS feed is could almost be considered not a blog by some people since RSS is how most people read/stay up to date on blogs, etc.

^oops meant to say “a blog without a RSS feed”

  • efsl, jameswelch is correct about javascript being ineffective. The stolen.wordpress.com FAQ has more detail. Anyone trying to convince you that they work is probably trying to sell you something.
